10 Songs to Slow Dance to with Your Body Pillow on Valentine’s Day

February 13, 2013

Valentine’s Day is such a special day for every one.

For the people in devoted relationships, they get to spend the day showing their partners how much they care. They spend the week leading up to Valentine’s Day finding the perfect gifts. Granted, it’s probably pretty stressful. I mean, after living with someone for 50 years, I think you would run out of ideas right?

Forget 50, try five.

Valentine's Day (Happy Endings)

But after the exchanging of gifts comes the best part……………………….. _____Fill in the blank _____.

So we’ve established that Valentine’s Day is a pretty special day for couples. What about singles? It’s a pretty special day for us too.

Every Valentine’s Day, we wake up 30 minutes ahead of our usual time just so we can stare at our closets for a bit longer than usual. What should I wear today? What should I wear? Every item we pick up, we ask ourselves: will this catch another single’s attention?

I’ve already got my outfit picked out, and I don’t care that it’s probably the same outfit as last year.

For us singles, Valentine’s Day is all about seeing who’s left in the game. In our day-to-day lives, it’s always so hard to tell if that guy/gal is taken, but on Valentine’s Day, it becomes really obvious. It’s almost like there is a parting of the seas; all the couples move to the side and the singles are in clear view.

Once a year, we singles perk up and check out the view. Come to think of it, it’s kind of like Groundhog’s Day. On this day, we come out of our holes and check out this season’s prospects. Do we smell an early fling?

After putting on our fave red outfits, we step out of the house with our eyes wide open. There is no time like the present! Gotta keep those eyes wide open; Valentine’s Day only comes once a year!

We spend our day first, strutting around with bursting enthusiasm, convinced that today is going to be the day. But by noon, that strut has transformed itself into more of a march. Later, that march turns into a dragging of the heels, and by the time we’ve reach home, all we can manage to do is make ourselves a bottomless bowl of popcorn and pop When Harry Met Sally into the VCR (yes those still exist – I own three).

Well, we tell ourselves, there’s always next year. We’ve done our jobs for today; we’ve scoped out the playing field, been envious for the majority of the day, had cake with the girlfriends or grabbed a couple of beers with the bros. Now, it’s us-time. It’s time to indulge. There’s nobody home – one of the reasons why being single is awesome, we remind ourselves. After watching When Harry Met Sally, we ask ourselves what we should do now.

This is when we hit a rock bottom; we’re starting to fall into a slump. Damn, it sucks to be single. This is the stage in which we decide that creating an online dating profile might not be so bad after all. After spending an hour trying to take a good display pic of ourselves for our new online profiles, all we manage to get is this:

Happy Endings - Penny

After trying out every filter there is on Instagram, we throw our fake glasses on the floor and proclaim:

Happy Endings - Penny

That’s when we get back on our high. We throw a pot on the stove and start melting our own semi-sweet Baker’s Choice chocolate. We’re pulling those strawberries out of the fridge and we’re asking ourselves, who needs lovers to buy us chocolates when we can make them ourselves for 3/4 the price at home?

An hour later, our mouths and fingers are covered in chocolate, and that’s when we realize that having someone around to clean up the mess wouldn’t be so bad after all. What that, we put the iPod on the dock and grab our body pillows. We know what to do; 365 days ago, we were owning this activity.

10 Songs to Slow Dance to with Your Body Pillow on Valentine’s Day

(in no particular order…. Although, if you must know, number 1 and 8 are my faves.)

  1. Crazy – Patsy Cline
  2. An Affair to Remember – Vic Damone
  3. Hopelessly Devoted to You – Olivia Newton-John
  4. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes – The Platters
  5. Long Ago (and Far Away) – Gene Kelly & Rita Hayworth
  6. As Time Goes By – Dooley Wilson
  7. I’m Through with Love – Marilyn Monroe
  8. Only You (and You Alone) – The Platters
  9. (Just One Way to Say) I Love You – Frank Sinatra
  10. Where or When – Harry Connick Jr.

(All of these songs are in the high double digits – some in the triple digits – under the number of plays in my iTunes!)

We start to dance. At one point, we’re totally channeling Rita Hayworth. When the playlist ends, we fall onto our beds and let out a sigh.

But that’s when another playlist starts. We scramble to find the remote control because all we want to do is wallow in our loneliness in silence. But we can’t find the remote, and it’s too late now. Our knees have lives of their own, and before we know it, we’re running over to the dock to dial up the song.

There’s no going back; we’re in it now, and we can’t stop. But the thing is, we don’t want to stop. And as we spiral around the living room, we tell yourselves, Valentine’s Day is awesome. Who needs a lover anyway?

What are you guys/gals doing for Valentine’s Day?
